Abietic acid is believed to be the (or one of the) compounds responsible for colophony resin induced occupational asthma. Challenge tests with abietic acid in cases of colophony asthma have been positive but there is evidence that other resin acids may also be sensitisers. Occupational asthma is not the only respiratory disease caused by colophony resins. Rhinitis is more common than asthma (and may be an early warning sign for developing occupational asthma). Much rarer is allergic alveolitis. Most cases of colophony asthma occur when the resin is heated and fumes evolve. This is why the highest risk occupations for colophony asthma are those involved in electronics soldering. Colophony resin is found in the soldering fluxes. Asthma due to unheated colophony is rare but not unknown.
