Properties

Pentaerythritol is a white, crystalline and odourless powder with a degree of purity at 94 – 95% and a slighty sweet taste to it. It is also known as Hercules P 6, monopentaerythritol, tetramethylolmethane, THME, PETP, pentaerythrite and Pentek. It's molar mass is 136.15 and its density is 1.396g/cm3. The melting point of pentaerythritol is defined at 260.5°C, its boiling point at 276°C at 30 mmHg and it is combustible with a flash point at 200.1°C. Its solubility in cold water is 5.6 g/100 mL at 15°C. It is soluble in ethylene glycol, methanol, ethanol, glycerol and formamide. It is insoluble in acetone, benzene, ether, Ccl4 and paraffin. In conclusion, its properties define it to be non-hygroscopic, non-volatile and stable in air.

This organic tetrafunctional compound is a neopentyl alcohol and the prefix “penta” indicates its five carbon atoms. It is formed when acetaldehyde is treated with formalehyde in an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide. It does not form a health hazard and is considered non-toxic, but it is not readily biodegradable.

Applications

Pentaerythritol is largely used as a component of resin esters in the coating industry for paints, lacquers, printing inks, varnishes, floor coverings and adhesives. Belonging to the hydroxyl groups, pentaerythritol possesses a compact structure and high density which makes it an excellent component in alkyd resins. Its drying speed, durability and its water and alkali resistance allow surface application in high gloss coatings.

As an intermediate it is most commonly used in the production of rosin esters. Pentaerythritol is a component of an ester particularly useful for conditions of high temperature, such as gas turbine aircraft engines. Its excellent resistance to oil extraction and its good oxidative stability makes pentaerythritol resins especially good plasticizers. It finds further application in electroplating processes and lubricants. In combination with TNT this versatile compound forms the explosive pentolite.
