12-Hydroxystearic Acid (12-HSA)

12-Hydroxystearic Acid (12-HSA) is an organic compound used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. As a hydroxy fatty acid, it belongs to the group of substituted carboxylic acids. The substance is obtained through the catalytic hydrogenation of ricinoleic acid, which is a primary component of castor oil. 12-Hydroxystearic acid can therefore also be produced in large quantities based on a vegetable raw material. Alternatively, the compound can be prepared from the starting material 2-hexylcyclododecanone in a multi-stage process.

In industry, 12-hydroxystearic acid is used in high-performance greases, hot-melt adhesives, cosmetic products, paints, inks, polishes and waxes, and as a lubricant for rubber. Vegetable oil-based organogels, pharmaceuticals, technical oleochemicals, as well as acrylic polymers and general-purpose lithium are manufactured on the basis of the compound. The metal salts of 12-hydroxystearic acid serve, among other things, as a stabilizer for intermediates in polymer technology.

You can reliably obtain the required amount of 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) from us. We look forward to receiving your inquiry for an individual offer. It is delivered as a crystalline solid in 25 kg bags.

More Information

12-Hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) is a substituted carboxylic acid that has an additional functional group in addition to the carboxy group. The compound has a hydroxy group on the twelfth carbon atom of its main chain. As a result, the substance has stronger intermolecular forces of attraction than the simpler stearic acid, which is expressed, among other things, in a higher melting point of the compound. In addition, hydroxy fatty acids such as 12-hydroxystearic acid have better solvent miscibility, higher viscosity and higher reactivity.

12-Hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) is a white to yellowish solid present in crystalline structures such as scales or flakes. The compound is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, chloroform and diethyl ether, but insoluble in water. 12-Hydroxystearic acid has a faint but characteristic inherent odor.

12-Hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) is combustible, but difficult to ignite. The substance itself is not explosive in its pure form. However, if very fine dust and particles are stirred up, there may be a risk of a dust explosion. Consequently, handling open containers in the vicinity of ignition sources such as sparks, flames and electrostatic charges should be avoided.

According to the GHS classification, 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) is not considered a hazardous substance. However, irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract cannot be ruled out in the event of direct contact. The substance is not subject to any transport regulations and there is no risk of water pollution if it penetrates the soil, the sewage system or bodies of water. Dust from the compound can be treated like total dust during disposal (taking into account possible explosion risks).
