Vinyl toluene is a mixture of aromatic compounds that are similar to the compounds toluene and styrene. The individual components can be used for different purposes. For example, α-methylstyrene is used as a raw material for the production of alkyd resins, polyester resins and plasticizers for paints, varnishes, waxes and plastics. Polymerization of the substance produces the plastic poly-alpha-methylstyrene. 2-Methylstyrene, on the other hand, serves as a modifier for alkyd resins, which is used in the production of polystyrene, among other things.
